Keller gave an interview to The Kansas City Star. She told the newspaper of her shock when he said “He may be great, she says, but he does not reach genius, because he lacks individual humanism”. It was reported that Shaw asked her “Why do all you Americans say the same thing?”. “Why do you hate us Americans so?” Miss Keller replied. “I don’t hate Americans,” Mr. Shaw retorts. “Why should I go to America when all America comes to see me?” Lady Astor allegedly grabbed Shaw by the arm and said: “Shaw, don’t you realize that this is Helen Keller? She is deaf and blind.”. Shaw then said: “Why, of course! All Americans are deaf and blind - and dumb.”
Keller went on to say “I think George Bernard Shaw is one of the greatest men in the world today. But in some respects, he is wanting when weighed in the scales of supreme genius. At any rate, that is the way he impressed me when I met him recently at the home of Lady Astor in London. He is a most exhilarating personality. For at least forty years he has questioned all our traditions, ridiculed all our conventions and scoffed at all our virtues. And, though we have writhed under his lash we have elevated him to the pinnacle of a prophet by reading him, going to his plays and discussing him.”
