London: Bradbury & Evans, Whitefriars, 1846. Small octavo. pp. [iv], 175, [1, “The End”]. With engraved frontispiece and vignette title (as issued). Original publisher’s red cloth, elaborately blind-stamped boards, upper cover with central gilt vignette and lettering, spine gilt; all edges gilt. Some light wear to extremities, with minor rubbing at head and tail of spine and a small nick to the upper edge; slight lean to the binding as often encountered. A very good, superior copy overall, particularly appealing for the brightness of the cloth and gilt—elements often dulled in this title.

A bright and well-preserved example of Dickens’s fourth “Christmas Book,” retaining its original decorative cloth binding in notably fresh condition. The gilt blocking to the upper cover remains sharp and attractive, while the blind-stamped borders are cleanly impressed. Internally crisp, with only light, occasional spotting; title and dedication leaves present, including the inscription: “This Christmas Book is cordially inscribed to my English friends in Switzerland.”

A key volume in Dickens’s celebrated Christmas series, The Battle of Life differs from its companions in lacking supernatural elements, instead offering a more domestic and moral tale centred on sacrifice, love, and reconciliation. Though sometimes overshadowed by A Christmas Carol, it remains an essential component of the Christmas Books corpus and is increasingly appreciated by collectors seeking complete runs in original cloth.

Dickens’s Christmas Books (1843–1848) were conceived as richly produced seasonal works combining narrative fiction with high-quality illustration and binding design. The present title, issued in 1846, reflects the commercial and artistic success of the series, with publishers investing heavily in decorative cloth bindings—now among the most desirable aspects for collectors.
