New York, NY: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1927. [53447] [Modern Literature] FIRST EDITION, with a complete number '3' to p.3. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[12]; 232; [8].
With the original endpapers and black cloth upper cover and spine bound in. Recent full black morocco with gilt titles and decoration to spine, and a gilt signature stamped to upper board. Marbled endpapers; top edge gilt, fore-edge untrimmed. Lightly toned as expected, else a fine copy.
Grissom notes five printings in 1927 which are very difficult to tell apart. It is generally accepted that the later printings have a broken ‘3’ on p.3. Many of the tales collected here appear in book form for the first time, following initial publication in various periodicals; Hemingway is remembered for his novels, but it was the short stories that first attracted notice.
