Sydney & London: Angus and Robertson, 1948. First edition. Octavo. pp. xv, 140, [47 (Photographic illustrations by Hurley - “The Story in Pictures”. Map on endpapers. Blue cloth, ‘Endurance’ in white on upper cover.

This gripping historical account chronicles the harrowing 1915 Antarctic expedition led by Ernest Shackleton, as seen through the eyes of its official photographer. It vividly details the crew’s struggle for survival against the unforgiving polar landscape after their ship, the Endurance, became trapped in ice. The narrative powerfully illustrates the extraordinary resilience and leadership required to navigate such an extreme environment. Readers will find a compelling testament to human endurance and the indomitable spirit of exploration in Shackleton’s Argonauts: The Epic Tale Of Shackleton’s Voyage To Antarctica In 1915.
Hurley’s Argonauts of the South first appeared in 1925, containing a narrative of his time with Mawson’s and Shackleton’s expeditions. In 1948 Hurley reissued the work, but without the Mawson chapters, so that the book’s focus became entirely Shackleton’s Endurance expedition.
