Hopewell, New Jersey: The Ecco Press, 1994. First Edition. pp. [viii], 133. Black quarter cloth on grey paper boards, gilt title on spine, housed in an original maroon sun-tanned cloth slipcase. Top edge untrimmed. A very good copy.
One of only 350 numbered and signed copies, this being No. 232, signed by Cormac McCarthy on the limitation page.
The Stonemason is McCarthy’s deeply personal and symbolically charged play centred on three generations of an African-American family in Louisville, Kentucky. Written with the same moral gravity and pared prose as his novels, it explores themes of faith, legacy, and self-destruction. Though drafted in the late 1970s and workshopped by the Actors Theatre of Louisville, it was not published until 1994 by The Ecco Press, marking McCarthy’s first major work for the stage.
An immaculate example of the scarce signed limited issue, produced to exacting standards by The Ecco Press and designed by Peter A. Andersen. Increasingly uncommon in such fine condition with its slipcase intact.
