A delightful and highly collectible series of Irish place-name cards issued by John Player & Sons and attributed to Jack B. Yeats. Produced in two series and vividly printed in colour, the cards depict landscapes, legends, historical figures, and scenes associated with towns and counties throughout Ireland. Each card provides the place name in both Irish and English, together with its literal meaning and explanatory historical note on the reverse. Combining Irish topography, folklore, language revival, and graphic design, the series ranks among the most attractive Irish cigarette card issues of the twentieth century. Complete sets are increasingly scarce, particularly in such well-preserved condition. Attribution to Jack B. Yeats is accepted by the National Library of Ireland (NLI Newsletter, Winter 2009).
