SCARCE FIRST EDITION

JOYCE, James: Pomes Penyeach.Paris: Shakespeare & Co., 1927. First edition. Small 12mo. pp. [24] + errata. Original pale green papered boards, titled in black on upper cover. Price and printer in black on lower cover. With errata slip tipped in on lower pastedown. Slight sun-tanning to spine. A good copy.

Pomes Penyeach contains thirteen poems, beneath each poem is printed in italics the place and year of composition. Sylvia Beach and the author were in agreement that this book should be printed as ""cheaply"" as possible, consistent with the book's title and brilliant concept.

The original price was a shilling (twelve francs). Just as Greek blue was James Joyce's colour of choice for 'Ulysses', an even more special colour Irish-Calville Apple, was chosen for this edition: ""Colors were emblematic and symbolic for Joyce, who was very particular about this shade of green, which unfortunately fades fast!"" ('Sylvia Beach and The Lost Generation', page 263)." 1927
