A warm, highly personal and unpublished autograph letter by Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, rich in literary and Dublin cultural associations. Written to friends arranging a meeting in Dublin, Heaney discusses his delayed journey to Wicklow and suggests dinner and drinks locations around the city, referencing several important literary sites and figures connected with twentieth-century Irish literature. Heaney proposes meeting later in the evening “for a couple of drinks”, recommending “Rolly’s in Ballsbridge” and later “Elephant & Castle” in Temple Bar. Particularly notable are the literary references woven casually throughout the letter. He mentions “McDaid’s on Harry Street”, famously associated with Patrick Kavanagh, and “The Palace on Fleet Street”, described as “Flann O’Brien & Patrick Kavanagh’s old haunt”. He also references “86 St Stephen’s Green”, where “Joyce went to college”, alongside the National Museum.
Also particularly noteworthy is Heaney’s reference to working on Beowulf, his landmark translation of the Old English epic, published the following year in 1999. Widely regarded as the definitive modern rendering, the work won the Whitbread Book of the Year Award. The letter offers a rare glimpse into the translation’s formative period.
The letter offers an unusually intimate glimpse into Heaney’s Dublin literary geography during the late 1990s, with spontaneous references to locations central to the mythology of modern Irish writing. Material of this personal nature, especially unpublished letters connecting Heaney with the wider Irish literary tradition, remains increasingly scarce.
