Spine divided into five panels by four gilt raised bands, title and volume numbers on contrasting red and green morocco labels in the second and third, the remainder diced in blind. Previous owner’s stamp ‘Nicholson / Castlewhite’ on front pastedown. All edges marbled. Light wear to extremities. A very good set.
This history was translated into many European languages and in Germany went through three editions in two years. Engraved titlepages. Imprint varies. Includes bibliographical references. This work was part of The Cabinet CyclopÊdia conducted by the Rev. Dionysius Lardner, LL.D. F.R.S. ... assisted by eminent literary and scientific men. Seemingly originally conceived as a 3 vol. set to be later published as a 4 vol. set. Engraved titlepages to vols 1-2 read ‘in three volumes’. The same to vols 3-4 read: ‘in four volumes’. The charming engraved titles includes: Attack on the English; Death of Brian Boru in his Tent; Death of Turgesius; Meeting of Essex and Tyrone.
