Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973), novelist, was born in Dublin. Educated in Kent, she went to London to live and was part of the literary set which included Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and the Bloomsbury group. After she inherited Bowens Court, County Cork, the family seat, she spent a part of each year there and also travelled a good deal in France and Italy. In all she published about a dozen novels, as well as short stories and essays. The Heat of the Day, which she considered her best novel was a Book Club choice in the U.S. and became a best-seller. She was awarded the CBE in 1948, and was made a Companion of Literature in 1965.
Set in Caslon type, and printed by Esther Ryan and Marie Gill, on paper made in Ireland.
