French troops under the command of General Humbert landed near Killala on the west coast of Ireland, to be joined by over three thousand local men eager to strike a blow for their country’s freedom. The author’s home became the headquarters of the insurgent army. Following a whirlwind campaign the combined force was defeated at Ballinamuck.
Joseph Stock (1740-1813), Bishop of Killala became a prisoner of the French under General Humbert. He kept a diary of these momentous events which was first published in 1799. The Bath edition is the only one that identifies the names of participants in the narrative.
