The Yellow Book of Lecan is a composite work consisting of 17 separate manuscripts, of which the most important Leabhar Giolla Íosa is a manuscript of 99 vellum folios penned by Giolla Íosa Mac Fhir Bhisigh in the 1390s (the only date he mentions being 1392). A small portion of the work was written in 1397 by his assistant Murchadh Riabhach Ó Cuinnlis, from east Galway, who, a decade or so later, also penned the great manuscript now known as the Leabhar Breac. Leabhar Giolla Íosa was written in Co. Sligo in the late 14th century, some of the other sixteen component manuscripts were written elsewhere – e.g. in north Roscommon and east Galway and, in at least one case, as late as the year 1465.
