Contemporary red full morocco with the arms of Clonmel in gilt on both covers within a single gilt fillet border intersected at corners. Spine professionally rebacked. Minor wear to covers. A very good copy of the rare first edition. Top edge gilt.
An important and substantial history of Clonmel and its surrounding district, compiled by the Rev. William P. Burke from manuscript and printed sources, including material in the Public Record Office, Royal Irish Academy and Bodleian Library. The work traces the town from its medieval origins through the seventeenth-century wars, Cromwellian period and eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with chapters on the Corporation, churches, parliamentary representatives, local wills, printing and journalism, Father Sheehy, the Abbey of Inishlounaght, Donoughmore and the Palatinate of Tipperary. It concludes with Clonmel notabilities, extensive indexes and a list of the original subscribers.
The illustrations include early views of Clonmel, the remains of the town wall, Main Guard, Parnell and O’Connell Streets, Corporation regalia, churches and notable monuments. A particularly desirable copy of this important County Tipperary local history.
