Stunning full crimson morocco, with elaborate gold tooling, covers framed by double gilt fillets flanking a small chain-link roll; borders of gilt stippled over-lapping scales with acorns and vines; branches of vines inner fleurons enclosing a large blue morocco rectangular onlay with gilt titling 'Amicle. Anny. Compy. / Revd Archdn. Benning, / 1st August, 1770'. Spine divided into six panels by five gilt raided bands with elaborate gilt tooling to a centre-and-corner design; board edged gilt; comb-marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Samuel Allen on front pastedown. In fine fresh condition. All edges gilt. A superb eighteenth century Irish binding in fine fresh condition.

Provenance: Conway Benning, LL.D was an Anglican priest in Ireland in the late 18th-century. Benning was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He was Archdeacon of Dromore from 1770 until his resignation in 1777.
Rules and procedures for members of the company. The ideas promoted by these co-operative societies were first introduced into Ireland by Edward Shadwell. In 1705 he established The Office of Assurance for the Support of Widows and Orphans, Ireland's first Assurance Company. The influence of such societies was particularly strong during the latter part of the eighteenth century with the establishment of the Annuity Company of Newry in 1770.
