An attractive Zaehnsdorf-bound edition of one of the principal contemporary biographies of Charles Stewart Parnell, the dominant figure of nineteenth-century Irish constitutional nationalism and leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party during the Home Rule crisis.
Compiled by the journalist and political writer R. Barry O’Brien, the work drew upon personal recollections, political correspondence, and first-hand accounts from individuals closely associated with Parnell and the nationalist movement. Issued only eight years after Parnell’s death, the biography remains one of the earliest substantial assessments of his political career, influence, and downfall.
The present example is particularly notable for its refined binding by Zaehnsdorf, among the most celebrated luxury binders operating in London during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Founded by Joseph Zaehnsdorf, the firm became internationally renowned for high-quality craftsmanship and counted major collectors, aristocratic libraries, and institutions among its clientele. The armorial bookplate of Panshanger links the set to the library of Panshanger House, the historic seat of the Cowper family in Hertfordshire, adding a further layer of aristocratic provenance and association.
