Baile Átha Cliath: Arna Fhoilsiú ag Oifig an tSoláthair, 1953. First edition. Octavo. pp. 151, [1] (last page headed Ceartúchán / Corrigenda). Original quarter cream linen on printed paper boards (price on upper cover: “Trí scillinge agus réal”). Light staining and foxing to boards and edges, a touch of toning to text. Previous owner’s signature on front endpaper. A very good copy of a scarce state-issue dictionary.
Prepared in the Training Section, Army Headquarters Staff, in consultation with the Oireachtas Translation Staff, and issued with the authority of the Minister for Defence.
Compiled within the Irish Defence Forces with the assistance of the Oireachtas Translation Service, this handbook represents one of the earliest officially sanctioned attempts to standardise Irish-language military terminology after independence. It covers the full range of contemporary usage—ranks, drill, equipment, logistics, administration, legal procedure, and training—presented English-to-Irish with concise equivalents (e.g. warrant, barracks, armoured, etc.), and concludes with a single-page Ceartúchán (errata). Issued by the Government Publications Office (Oifig an tSoláthair), copies were intended primarily for service and departmental use and survive less commonly in commerce than civilian dictionaries.
