Covers framed by double gilt fillets, spine divided into six compartments by five gilt raised bands, title and author in gilt on burgundy morocco letterpieces in the second and third, the remainder tooled in gilt to a centreand- corner design; board-edges and turn-ins gilt; blue splash-marbled endpapers; red and gold endbands. All edges gilt. A very good copy.
Maxwell's History of the Rebellion is considered pro-establishment, but nevertheless it is an important work with twenty-seven fine illustrations, mostly by Cruikshank, depicting the scenes of battles, massacres, executions etc. He wrote a total of twenty books in all. He died near Edinburgh in destitute circumstances in 1850.
