A superbly produced architectural study of the evolution of Dublin’s urban form from the medieval period to the Georgian city. Lavishly illustrated throughout with maps, plans, and the author’s own photographs, McCullough traces the shaping of Dublin’s streets, quays, and buildings with scholarly precision and a designer’s eye for structure and balance. The work is organised in sections on Origins (Viking, Medieval and Renaissance Dublin), The Georgian City, 1660–1840, and Intervention in the Georgian City, including extensive chapters on the House Type and Public Buildings.

The production design by Anne Brady and Kevin Dunne of Vermillion Design, and the fine printing by Associated Editions, render this volume one of the most handsome modern works on Dublin architecture. The embossed map motif on the binding evokes the topographical identity of the city itself.

Niall McCullough (1958–2021) was a founding director of McCullough Mulvin Architects, noted for projects such as the Ussher Library at Trinity College Dublin and the Source Arts Centre, Thurles. His architectural writings combine historical insight with practical experience of the built environment.
