Founded as the successor to the Irish Homestead and edited from 1923 by G. W. Russell (Æ), The Irish Statesman was the leading liberal-national weekly of the Free State, combining politics, economics and the arts. It provided a wide forum for Irish and international writers, essayists, critics and scientists, while promoting co-operative ideals, cultural pluralism and a European outlook. Issues from the later 1920s are increasingly scarce, not least because of the paper’s fragile format and the journal’s closure in 1930 after mounting losses and an expensive libel case. This number, with its mix of Commonwealth debate, medical modernity and Celtic scholarship (Praeger), is a characteristic specimen of Æ’s editorial breadth and of the intellectual climate of Dublin between the wars.
