Charles Paston Crane was born in 1857. He joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1879 and served through the land agitation in Kerry. From 1897 to 1900 he was a Resident Magistrate in Donegal. A distinguished career in the South African War led to the DSO in 1901. He received an OBE in 1918 for his service to the Crown as Battalion Commander in the Great War.
