John D’Alton (1792-1867) noted antiquary and genealogist, wrote many books on Irish History including the present work in collaboration with J.R. O’Flanagan. In the course of his career he assembled a valuable collection of rare books and manuscripts. In 1864 D’Alton being as he describes himself as “a septuagenarian” decided to sell his library as a collection or in parts. A 2pp. Catalogue inserted as a preliminary to his History of Drogheda lists 150 volumes, divided into 10 sections. D’Alton failed to find a purchaser for the collection which was dispersed (either in whole or part) after his death in 1867.
