London: Stanford Maritime, 1978. First edition. Large octavo. pp. x, 236. Very good copy in the original oatmeal cloth, title lettered in gilt on spine, in the original pictorial dust jacket. Light shelf wear to jacket, internally clean and bright.
A well-researched account of the fate of the Spanish Armada on the Irish coast following its disastrous encounter with the English fleet in 1588. Fallon examines the numerous shipwrecks around Ireland, particularly along the western seaboard, and reconstructs the experiences of the surviving sailors who reached Irish shores. Drawing upon contemporary records, local traditions, archaeological evidence and Spanish sources, the author provides a detailed narrative of one of the most dramatic episodes in Irish maritime history.
The chapters trace the Armada’s passage around Ireland, the wrecks at Streedagh, Donegal and elsewhere, the escape of Captain Francisco de Cuéllar, and the often brutal treatment meted out to survivors. Appendices include lists of Armada vessels, losses in Irish waters, excavated wreck sites, Irishmen connected with the Armada, and those who sheltered survivors.
An attractive copy of a standard modern work on the Spanish Armada in Ireland, of interest to collectors of Irish history, maritime history, naval warfare and Spanish-Irish relations. Scarce in such well-preserved condition with dust jacket.
