This book was first published in 1907 under the full and lengthy title of History of the Natural, Civil, Military and Ecclesiastical State of the County of Kerry in Baronies; accompanied by interesting antiquarian notices on the ancient remains therein together with an account of the state of the agrarian revolution and other political and religious movements: Corkaguiny. As the title suggests, the earlier part of the book is devoted to describing the geographical features of the barony, exploring the antiquarian relics there, the castles and religious edifices, and delving into some of the legends associated with them. The latter part covers more recent social and political history in the area, largely of the 19th century, recording the words of an Irish caoine (or keen), the effects of the famine, souperism, tenant evictions, moonlighting, smuggling, agrarian unrest, the Fenian uprising and the Home Rule and Land League movements.
