Belfast: Archer, 1869. Quarto. pp. viii, 472, xix, + corrigenda. Maroon cloth, title in gilt on rebacked spine. A very good copy.

An important work on the history of Ulster, its families, and Plantation. William Montgomery (1633-1707), was born at Aughaintain, Co. Tyrone, the son of Sir James Montgomery. He was drilling with a company of foot commanded by his grandfather, Sir William Stewart, at four in the afternoon, on 23 Oct 1641, when a fugitive brought news of the Irish Rising. The next day he was sent to Glasgow via Derry, where he went to High School. He wrote the manuscripts between 1696 and 1706 and parts of them were printed in the Belfast Newsletter and in 1830 a duodecimo volume edited by Dr. James MacKnight of Derry was published under the title of The Montgomery Manuscripts. The present edition is drawn principally from the latter with some new additions.
