No other Irish Mac name approaches MacCarthy in numerical strength. It is among the top twelve names in Ireland as a whole, due to the very large number of MacCarthy’s in County Cork. Charles O’Conor describes the sept as “the most eminent by far of the noble families of the south”.

Provenance: George Stirling Home Drummond of Blair Drummond and Ardoch (1813-1876) was a Scottish landowner and antiquarian. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in 1851 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1867, his proposer being Sir James Edward Alexander.
