The Maunsell family in Ireland are of Anglo-Norman origin and were numerous up to the end of the seventeenth century. The name is now rare and chiefly confined to that class usually described as landed gentry. The name occurs frequently in the Ormond Deeds, the Justiciary Rolls and the Irish Fiants, located for the most part in the counties of Tipperary and Limerick. Maunsell’s Bank was founded by a member of this family in 1789 and was one of the leading private banking institutions in Limerick. The name Maunsel is synonymous with the Irish literary renaissance of the first quarter of the last century. The firm of Maunsel & Co. Ltd. of Dublin published works of every writer in that movement except W.B. Yeats.

Provenance: The Minchins of Annagh, County Tipperary, descend from John Minchin of Annagh and Castle Inch, County Kilkenny, fourth son of the original Charles Minchin of Annagh and Busherstown. Descendants of John married with members of the Greens of Old Abbey, County Limerick, Falkiners of Cork and the Gabbetts of Caherline, County Limerick. In the mid 19th century the Minchin estate in the parish of Kilbarron amounted to at least 8 townlands. In the 1870s Falkner John Minchin owned 1,754 acres in county Tipperary.
