Belfast: B.N.L. 1966. First edition. pp. 249. Red cloth, titled in gilt. Ex lib David Munro with his bookplate. A very good copy in stained dust jacket.
This book deals with some of the Northern Irish clans descended from the famous Irish king, Niall of the Nine Hostages. This includes the O’Neills, McLoughlins, Devlins, Donnellys, Gormleys, Kanes, McCloskeys, Mullans, Duddys, Mellans, O’Hagans, Quinns, Hamills and Brollys. The author traces the rise of the O’Neills to supreme power in Ulster, the last bastion of Gaelic defiance to the English crown. The mainstay of O’Neill power was the O’Kane clan of North Derry, and O’Kane’s country was a strategic area in the plan of English conquest.
This is the first full-scale history of the O’Kanes.
