The vast majority of Mahony and O’Mahony’s are located in West Munster. In ancient times their chieftains were powerful. Their principal territory comprised the modern barony of Kinelmeaky and extended to the sea, with a fortified castle called Rosbrian off the coast of south-west Cork. The name Ó Mathghamhna - modernised Ó Mahúna is derived from their ancestor Mathghamhan (killed at the battle of Clontarf in 1014), whose mother was a daughter of Brian Boru. Another famous soldier of the name was Count Daniel O’Mahony (d.1714), General in the Irish Brigade in the service of France and hero of the Battle of Cremona.

Provenance: John Francis O’Mahony [Frank O’Mahony] of Ballinlough Road, Cork was a noted republican who according to his notes “Late of 2 Wing Cork Male Prison 11th June ‘21 / Spike Island 22nd June ‘21 / Victoria Barracks 25th June ‘21 / Newbridge Internment Camp Oct. 1923 / Tintown Internment Camp Jan. ‘24 / No 758, B I Wing, Mountjoy Prison, 1926.” Also with two patriotic verses in his hand.
