Dublin: Hodges, Figgis, & Co., Booksellers to the University, 20 Nassau Street, 1922. Octavo. pp. [c. 260]. Original dark green cloth, boards ruled in blind, title and imprint lettered in gilt on spine. Ex lib. A very good copy.
An important record of the contribution of Trinity College Dublin to the First World War, listing members of the University who served in the armed forces and associated services. The entries provide biographical and military details including degrees, regiments, ranks, theatres of service, wounds, decorations and, in many instances, dates of death or of being killed in action. Separate sections record members of the academic and administrative staff and employees of the Trinity College Printing House.
Published in February 1922, only a few years after the Armistice and during a transformative period in Irish history, the volume preserves a substantial primary record of Trinity’s wartime community. Individual entries include service in France, Flanders, Gallipoli, Salonika and elsewhere, making the work particularly useful for Irish military, genealogical and institutional research.
