In May 1655, the followers of Cromwell occupied Jamaica. At the end of that year it is generally accepted that 2,000 Irish boys and girls were transported to the island, although Patrick Corish refutes this in 'A New History of Ireland III'. However in 1756 Dr. Patrick Browne was most emphatic in his statement: "Cromwell having had early intelligence of this conquest (Jamaica) ... resolved to miss no opportunity of supporting this new acquisition, which now indeed served him as another Siberia".
