Published within months of Casement’s trial and execution, this Dublin pamphlet is among the earliest attempts to take the measure of him in print. L. G. Redmond-Howard (1884-1943), journalist, prolific commentator on the Rising, and nephew of John Redmond, leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, pitches his study as “a character sketch without prejudice,” an unusual promise amid the highly polarised propaganda of 1916. He traces Casement’s trajectory from celebrated humanitarian consul in the Congo and Putumayo, for which he was knighted in 1911, through his resignation and revolutionary turn, to the German mission, the abortive Aud gun-running, capture at Banna Strand, the London trial and execution.
