Undated Talbot Press anthology of William Carleton’s finest tales of rural Ireland, selections that distil his gift for sharp dialogue, comic set-pieces and unsparing portraits of poverty, piety and faction. Darrell Figgis’s substantial introduction (xv pp.) places Carleton within the nineteenth-century tradition and argues for his enduring realism and sympathy. Copies in the original pictorial dust jacket are extremely rare. It depicts a woman knitting by a spinning wheel and a gentleman at the half-door.
