Second Series. Dublin: Maunsel & Co., 1907. First edition. Small quarto. pp. 53. Very good in pictorial wrappers. Scarce.
One of the earliest dramatic treatments of the Deirdre legend produced during the Irish Literary Revival, A.E.’s Deirdre reflects the movement’s fascination with the heroic literature of ancient Ireland and its search for a distinctly national drama. George Russell (1867-1935), poet, mystic, painter, editor, and one of the leading intellectual figures of the Revival, drew upon the tragic tale of Deirdre and the Sons of Uisneach to create a work imbued with lyricism, symbolism, and spiritual idealism.
Issued as Number Four of the Tower Press Booklets, the play forms part of the remarkable body of literary and cultural publications associated with the Irish Revival in the opening years of the twentieth century.
