Henry Willard French, American author of fiction for juveniles and newspaper correspondent was a native of West Hartford, Connecticut. The story opens in Boston where a group of boys set sail for Scotland via Ireland. They land in Galway and travel around the west and south of Ireland. Along the way they meet peasants whose story they relate. After visiting Dublin they set sail for Scotland. The work is considerably enhanced by the magnificent illustrations.
