Charles Lever’s Charles O’Malley, The Irish Dragoon is one of the great adventure novels of nineteenth-century Ireland, combining humour, romance, and military exploits in a style that captivated readers across Europe and America. First published in serial form in Dublin University Magazine in the early 1840s, the novel was issued in book form in two volumes in 1841 and quickly became a best-seller. Lever, a physician by training who turned to writing, drew heavily on the picaresque tradition and on his own experiences in Dublin and the Continent. The story follows the dashing Charles O’Malley, a young Galway gentleman who joins the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars and whose adventures take him from Irish hunting fields to the battlefields of Spain and Portugal.

Renowned for its lively depiction of Irish society, comic side-characters such as Mickey Free, and vivid descriptions of cavalry charges and duels, Charles O’Malley established Lever as Ireland’s most popular novelist of his generation.
