This is John McGahern's first novel which won the AE Memorial Award. It tells the story of life in a police barracks in a rural village in Ireland. The story is from the viewpoint of the local woman who marries a cruel widower police officer. It gives an insight into the bleakness and desperation of her life in small town rural Ireland.
