Bound by Bayntun of Bath in full polished purple calf, covers framed by double gilt fillets, spine divided into six panels by five gilt raided bands, title and author in gilt on contrasting green and burgundy morocco labels, the remainder elaborately tooled in gilt to a centre-and-corner design; board edges and turn-ins gilt; marbled endpapers; red and blue endbands. All edges gilt. A near fine copy. €295
New edition of this illustrated version, originally published in 1895. Fully illustrated throughout with line drawings on every page. A fine clean copy which has been finely rebound, for Henry Sotheran of Piccadilly, in half dark brown morocco. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt piping. The compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Brown cloth on boards and gilt ruled lines along leather borders. Top edge gilt. A lovely copy of this beautifully illustrated book
lettering/decoration to spine and front are very good with a few marks, a little pushing/bumping to corners, a few patches of fading, minor darkening to spine, the odd small bump/rub to edges and a little pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine. Minor spine lean. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. Top edge of pages gilt (slightly scratched). Small bookseller’s sticker inside back board. Odd small mark/minor foxing to page edges and bottoms. Inside boards/end-papers tanned with a few marks/mild foxing. Previous owner’s name in pen to front blank page. Occasional small mark/scattered foxing to pages. No other faults. A nice copy. All books described honestly and accurately.
