Original colour photograph, 5 x 7 inches, double-weight glossy print, depicting President John F. Kennedy inspecting a military honour guard upon arrival at Dublin Airport, June 1963, during his historic visit to Ireland. The image captures the formal reception ceremony on the airport apron, with uniformed Irish troops in formation and assembled dignitaries and spectators in the background. A light crease visible at the lower margin, not affecting the image. In very good vintage condition, colour remains strong and unfaded. 127 x 178 mm.

Provenance: From the estate of Cecil William Stoughton, official White House photographer to President Kennedy.

Cecil William Stoughton (1920–2008), the official White House photographer during the Kennedy administration and one of the most important American political photographers of the twentieth century. Stoughton accompanied Kennedy on all major foreign visits and was present throughout the Irish trip, producing the definitive visual record of the President’s ancestral homecoming.

Verso bearing Kodak photographic paper watermark and original Stoughton archival file reference in pencil, consistent with photographs released directly from the photographer’s working archive. The present example is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from JG Autographs, confirming originality and attribution, and stating provenance from the estate of Cecil Stoughton.

A striking and historically resonant image from Kennedy’s Irish visit, just five months before his assassination, and among the most celebrated diplomatic journeys of his presidency.

Original Stoughton colour photographs of Kennedy in Ireland are significantly scarcer than their black-and-white counterparts and are highly sought after by collectors of Irish-American history, presidential material, and Cold War photography. Dublin Airport arrival images are especially desirable as they mark the symbolic beginning of Kennedy’s emotional return to his ancestral homeland.
