This portrait of the Antarctic explorer is actually an image of Shackleton’s waxwork as displayed at Madame Tussaud’s.
During the Nimrod Expedition of 1907-1909, Ernest Shackleton and three companions established a new record Farthest South latitude of 88°23′ S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles or 180 kilometres) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history.
Rotary was founded 1898 as a subsidiary company of Neue Photographische Gesellschaft (NPG). It became Britain’s largest producer of photographic postcards and other photographic products, printed at West Drayton. Round about 1910 the postcard boom subsided and the war in 1914 didn’t help, leading to a voluntary winding up in 1916 followed by sale as an enemy firm. Succesors continued to produce Rotary postcards through the company Rotary Photographic (1917) Ltd.
