William Bulfin (1864-1910) was born in Derrinlough, County Offaly. He emigrated to Argentina while still in his teens, where he worked as a „gaucho‟ before becoming the owner-editor of The Southern Cross in which the chapters of this work first appeared. Bulfin returned to Ireland in 1902. He was a close friend of Arthur Griffith and a publicist for Sinn Fein. His daughter Catalina married the Nobel Prize-winning Republican politician and human rights jurist Sean MacBride. Bulfin used the pen-name „Che Buono‟.
