In his introduction the author tells us: “At the request of my friends, I have decided to put into book form, a series of articles and lectures which were written and delivered in Republican and other circles. I have also added new material and a few poems in order to complete the story of The Lady at the Gate. The title was chosen in honour of Anne Devlin who stood at Butterfield Gate on that July morning in 1803 as she waved goodbye to Robert Emmet and his friends.”
