Dublin: The Talbot Press, 1927. 16mo. First edition. pp. 36. Original pale green pictorial wrappers printed in black, front cover illustration signed ‘S. O’Sullivan 1927’; price “One Shilling” to lower margin. Inscribed by the author to Lilian on front endpaper. A very good copy.
Michael Joseph [M. J.] MacManus (1891-1951), Leitrim-born journalist, poet and later literary editor of The Irish Press, issued this early collection of verse celebrating the people and landscapes of the western province. The striking cover, showing a seated Connacht countryman with spade, is by the young Seán O’Sullivan (1906-1964), then emerging as one of the leading illustrators and portraitists of the new State.
