A charming piece of dialect collecting from the south shore of Lough Neagh, Montiaghisms records the everyday speech of the Montiaghs, the low-lying townlands and boglands of County Armagh, as heard by the local collector William Lutton. Edited after his death by the Belfast antiquary Francis Joseph Bigger (who supplies a short biographical sketch). The pamphlet arranges words and phrases with brief glosses and examples, capturing a register that blends Ulster-Scots, Hiberno-English, and survivals from Irish. Items range from household and farm vocabulary to weather, fishing, and bog-work terms, with idiomatic turns of speech that fix pronunciation and rhythm as much as meaning.
