Tadhg Ó Donnchadha (1874-1949) was an Irish writer, poet, editor, translator and a prominent member of the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) and the Gaelic Athletic Association. In 1901 he became editor of Banba, and also became Irish-language editor of the Freeman’s Journal, the following year he also became editor of the Irisleabhar na Gaedhilge (The Gaelic Journal). He wrote under the pseudonym Torna, after Torna Éices.
In one of the very few articles in English, he wrote: “Our sympathies are broad enough to extend to everything that makes for the advancement of Ireland - socially, politically, and industrially - and our attention shall be devoted in an especial manner to the strengthening of the economic position of the country. We shall continually keep before us the importance of using the Irish language in dealing with the ordinary concerns of life; and in working out the programme which we have mapped out for ourselves, Irish shall be the principal medium, through which our ideas must largely find expression”.
