He saw Shannon not only as a transportation hub but as a symbol of modern Ireland’s ambitions and progress on the world stage.

His government provided backing for infrastructural developments at Shannon during the mid-20th century, aligning with his broader vision for economic self-sufficiency and national pride. De Valera’s association with Shannon Airport reflects his keen awareness of the role of aviation and international connectivity in shaping Ireland’s future in a rapidly changing world.
