With an introduction by John Peel. London: Pippen Publishers, 1977. First edition. Quarto. pp. 40. Black cloth, with the title “Philip” blocked in green on upper cover. Illustrated throughout with striking black-and-white artwork by Tim Booth, Jim Fitzpatrick, and others. Signed by Phil Lynott and Mark Stanway (Lynott's keyboard player) on the front free endpaper. A very good copy.
First edition of Phil Lynott’s only book of poetry, issued at the height of Thin Lizzy’s fame. Dedicated to his mother, Philomena, the volume contains 36 poems including Old Flame, Suicide, The Boys are Back in Town, and Cowboy Song, many of which parallel Thin Lizzy’s lyrics. The book was privately printed by Pippen Publishers and sold in small numbers at concerts and through fan clubs, making it one of the most elusive pieces of Thin Lizzy memorabilia.
The introduction by legendary BBC broadcaster John Peel situates Lynott within the Dublin music scene of the 1970s, praising his mixture of romanticism, street lyricism, and Irish identity. The bold illustrations by Fitzpatrick and Booth (who also designed Lizzy album art) provide a strong visual accompaniment, underscoring Lynott’s fascination with myth and warrior imagery.
