Thomas Addis Emmet (1828-1919), the foremost pupil of J. Marion Sims and his successor as chief surgeon at The Woman's Hospital in New York City, was probably the pre-eminent American gynaecological surgeon of the last quarter of the 19th century. Emmet was the son of John Patten Emmet and grandson of Thomas Addis Emmet, an attorney and member of the Society of United Irishmen, was arrested following the 1798 uprising and spent several years in prison. After his release, he lived for a time in Brussels and in Paris before departing for the United States in 1804 with his wife, Jane Patten Emmet, and their older children. John Patten Emmet and his two younger siblings remained with other family members in Dublin until March 1805, when they left to join their parents in New York. His grand-uncle was the patriot Robert Emmet. Thomas was an active writer, a renowned collector of Irish and American historical documents and memorabilia, a devout Catholic and a steadfast Irish patriot.
