Frongoch tells the story of the internment of over 1800 Irishmen in North Wales in the aftermath of the 1916 Easter Rising. It records their experiences there during that eventful year. The story of the leaders of 1916, including Pearse, Connolly, Clarke, De Valera and William Cosgrave, is well known. This book, however, deals with those I.R.A. Volunteers not considered senior enough by the British Authorities for Courts-martial.
Frongoch Internment Camp provided an ideal opportunity for the I.R.A. to develop the philosophy of revolution. The internees returned home to Ireland to organise and later to engage the might of the British Empire in a war of independence. Frongoch also set the pattern for Irish Republican prisoners in many subsequent periods of internment throughout the twentieth century.
The internees became the leaders in the continued fight against the British occupation and included Michael Collins, Dick Mulcahy, Dick McKee, Tomás MacCurtain, Terence MacSwiney, Sean T. O’Kelly, Oscar Traynor, Joe Clarke, Seán Russell, Tom Derrig, Domhnall Ó Buachalla, Sean Hales, Dr. James Ryan, Brian O’Higgins and Séamus Robinson. Incidentally, these were the first graduates of the University of Revolution.
