London: Thames and Hudson, 1983. 4to. pp. 251. Illustrated throughout with 185 illustrations, 36 in colour. Original pictorial wrappers, lightly rubbed at extremities, otherwise a very good copy.
Signed by David Hockney on the half-title in his characteristic bold hand, dramatically striking through his printed name in blue ink and writing his signature beneath in blue and red.
Provenance: The book was signed for me by David Hockney at the National Media Museum in Bradford in 1984
Livingstone’s substantial critical study traces Hockney’s development from his early work at the Royal College of Art through the celebrated Californian period and his experiments with portraiture, drawing, printmaking and stage design. The book was produced with Hockney’s close cooperation and incorporates material from a series of interviews conducted with the artist in Los Angeles and London in 1980.
An attractive association with one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century, considerably enhanced by Hockney’s unusually large and colourful inscription.
