Cork: The Mercier Press, 1992. First edition. Octavo. pp. 271. Fine copy in original black cloth, titled in gilt on spine, in fine dust jacket. Presentation copy, inscribed by Gus Smith on the half-title: “George, Since this was the first biography of John B. I was rather proud of it. It was a true labour of love. My best regards, Gus Smith, 7/5/2002.”
The first full-length biography of the celebrated Kerry playwright, novelist and raconteur John B. Keane (1928–2002), whose works such as The Field, Sive, The Year of the Hiker, and Big Maggie secured his place among the most important figures in twentieth-century Irish theatre. Drawing extensively on interviews, family recollections, and archival material, Smith and Hickey trace Keane’s life from his upbringing in Listowel through his literary success, public controversies, and international reputation. The volume includes a substantial bibliography and index and remains an important source for scholars of modern Irish drama.
A particularly appealing association copy. Gus Smith, journalist and broadcaster, was a close friend and admirer of Keane and devoted considerable effort to documenting his life and career. His inscription reflects the pride he took in producing the first comprehensive biography of a writer who helped define the cultural identity of North Kerry and whose dramatic works continue to be performed internationally. Copies signed or inscribed by Smith are uncommon, especially those containing a personal reflection on the creation of the work itself.
